How To Read Barometer

A simple instrument which helps us to find out the exact pressure produced by the total weight of the atmosphere at a place is known as barometer. It is generally used in labs to determine the altitude of a place and for weather forecasting purposes. Anyone can easily make his or her own weather prophecy by examining the changes in the pressure of barometer or we can say simply reading the barometer. So what I am going to do is just give you step by step guide to read a barometer.

  1. You will need to recognize what is the type of your barometer. Usually “aneroid” is used for personal and “mercury” is for scientific purposes.

  2. Just check if there is a screw for adjustment purposes on an aneroid barometer. Here, you will need to consult your instruction booklet to identify if it is important to turn this screw in order to set the barometer according to the existing pressure readings or not.

  3. Then mount your barometer where it is easy for you to observe and regulate.

  4. You can call airport, weather service or any news channel to get the exact barometer reading.

  5. Adjust the barometer according to the reading provided to you on the phone.

  6. Confirm if your barometer have two needles or not. These days, most of the barometers come with one needle which you need to manually move whereas the other one automatically follows all the changes in the atmosphere and adjust accordingly.

  7. Position the changeable needle to overlap the automatic one, marking the current pressure.

  8. Carefully watch the needle which automatically follows atmospheric changes to move upwards or downwards from a fixed point. Before taking the reading, tap the barometer gently.

  9. Evaluate the readings provided by the weather reports and the reports provided by your barometer and make essential changes in your barometer if they are not same.
